One day I felt like giving this a go. Essentially it's a file browser where the name of a folder is proportional to how much it contains.
My first attempt is a script which browses one's music folder, reading how many tracks there are by each artist and displaying it something like this. (Note, there's very little correlation between the number of tracks I have by an artist, and how much I like said artist.)

This is just running on the file tree of the music folder, not reading track data from the actual files.
Just because I can, I got the program to display the first Google Images result for each band too. This takes much longer to run, of course, and also tends to slow the browser down a lot, so here's a screenshot.
The first Google result isn't always the best one, as you can see, but I didn't want to spend too much time refining this bit.
To get this to run as a full file browser it needed to work quicker. Normally directories don't tell you their size as it takes too long to calculate. I got around this by making a cache file which preprocesses directory sizes so the file browser can work almost instantly.
As a demo I've put up this page which you can just look around the images folder on this site. You'll have to take my word that it's a lot more impressive when there's more to look around in.
You can download the source and run it on your own server if you like, or on your hard disk if you have PHP running locally. It's rather entertaining.
The next step of course was to merge this with my previous file manager, so we have all the functionality we need along with the lovely interface.
